Bassa occupazione femminile, alta denatalità: le opinioni delle donne sul social freezing e sulla scelta di diventare madre in Italia

March 20, 2023 @ 2:00 am - 7:00 pm

Today’s Italian society is characterised by a strident paradox: low female employment and a low birth rate. In this scenario, women often still have little knowledge of the fertility cycle, which sees a significant drop from the age of 35 onwards.
Scientific research, the market, and the state make various proposals to women who wish to have a child but who, often for work-related reasons, postpone the decision to do so until after 35. Among these, one of the proposals widespread abroad, but much less so in Italy, is the cryopreservation of oocytes for non-medical reasons, commonly known as ‘social freezing’.

What opinions and information do women have on this practice? What knowledge do they have about the fertility cycle? What are the views on companies that offer social freezing as a benefit for their employees? What are the critical aspects and ethical implications of this type of procedure?

The conference, which is of a purely multidisciplinary and informative nature, will – in the first plenary part – propose reflections on these and other questions through the data of the research project “CRIOCONSERVATION OF OOCYTES: KNOWLEDGES, OPINIONS, ATTITUDE IN ITALY – 2021′, which involved 600 women in Italy aged 18-60 who filled in an anonymous online questionnaire (a study carried out by a team from the University of Milan-Bicocca and the University of Padua) and will then develop into two parallel sessions, which will see the intervention of experts in biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, economics and law and other subjects.

The day will end with a round table discussion with public figures and the world of show business on the topic of PMA (Medically Assisted Procreation) as a taboo in the public debate.

The event is promoted by the Departments of Economic and Business Sciences and Law for Economics, Sociology and Social Research, Law, and the Department of Cardio-Thoracic-Vascular Sciences and Public Health of the University of Padua
